ENC SPOTLIGHT | QUE EL-AMIN

Savvy, articulate, and integral to his community are some of the few words to describe Que El-Amin.

Real estate developer, Founder and Principal of Young Enterprising Society, Que El-Amin is about making an economic impact and developing the next generation of Milwaukee’s youngest and brightest.

As a Milwaukee native, Que has never been afraid to explore, discover and grow beyond his city limits. It is these same discoveries that allowed him to have such a positive influence in the city of Milwaukee, and it’s progress forward.

We had the opportunity to speak to Que learning how he remains grounded and how he refuses to be afraid to branch out of his comfort zone to grow and give back.

What is the best word that describes what led you to where you are today? And why?

I would say persistence because since 2006, the only day I haven’t worked was the day after Thanksgiving of 2019.

Weekends, holidays, New Years, birthdays

weren’t days off for me.

So I would say that being persistent in your goals through the highs and lows that do pay off.

What is and/or are your daily spiritual practice(s)?

In other words, what are the daily habits you consistently do to maintain a healthy well being to execute at the level you operate from)?

I don’t work out like I should, but I do try to eat well such as cutting back on sugars, eating lots of vegetables and cooking at home not eating fast food.

Spiritually whether it is a practice or a religion, it is important to stay or stick to that.

I do fast as well such as giving up a practice or habit.

It helps me stay focused on a mindset and goal, it helps you mentally.

Intellectually, I am continually learning. I like attending conferences even if there are ones I am working. You never know it all so it’s good to grow and learn from others. Working within the schools helps keep me on my toes, the youth are always showing you what’s new and the latest trends of apps, ideas and in the know.

This helps you grow and keep my knowledge expanding and if you don’t, it keeps your knowledge limited to your generation.

What have obstacles taught you?

They are only temporary. You’ll think there are obstacles most times they are only temporary and what may seem as a challenge come to be something positive.

For example we write so many proposals, and have so many meetings where people will say no.

We will come back a year later and those same people will say yes.

We had a proposal someone said no to.

Later on, someone reached out to us from a different funding source and the same proposal that was denied previously fit the mission and goals of the current initiative.

What does embrace possibilities mean to you?

Take all opportunities.

Oftentimes choices are scary.

If you embrace them and explore each one, oftentimes good things can come from it.

And it also means taking risks because it leads to unique things.

If you could sum up your life’s purpose in three words, what would it be?

Constantly pursuing excellence.

A message to those wanting to make a difference in their community?

Don’t be afraid to leave your city to help your city. I lived in Chicago, Washington D.C., Madison, Houston, and Dallas

You have to get out a lot of times.

Our first initiative was out in New York, we called every YMCA in the area and out of 12, 2 worked with us.

That allowed us to come back to Milwaukee with knowledge and experience to build our track record leading to other things.

The Future is Bright as Que Continues to Say Yes to Possibilities

Left to Right Khalif El-Amin and Que El-Amin

This year (March 2020) Que and his brother Khalif El-Amin were recognized as Milwaukee’s top 40 under 40 professionals by the Milwaukee Business Journal.

His upcoming development project, The Community within the Corridor, will be unveiling soon.

This four-building development will have a total of 197 affordable housing with tens of thousands of square feet of commercial space.

They look to have this space for startups to a small grocer.

There are plans to also be a health club, daycare facility, laundromat and technology training and small business incubation space. The properties cover approximately seven acres.
